Australia and Wales both withdraw from Junior Eurovision 2020

Two countries have announced their withdrawal from the 2020 Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Warsaw, Poland: Australia and Wales.

SBS, the Australian Broadcaster, confirmed their withdrawal yesterday; stating the reason for their departure was the current Coronavirus situation. All travel within Australia has been banned internationally, and these government restrictions could remain until 2021.

And in Wales, S4C confirmed their withdrawal via Twitter. “Hi there, due to the present circumstances, unfortunately we will not be taking part in this years contest”. S4C will not be broadcasting the 2020 contest either. Their future participation is also in doubt, with the broadcaster adding “We’ll miss everyone too! We won’t be broadcasting it this year and no decision has been taken about our participation next year at present”.

Currently, the following countries have confirmed their participation in the 2020 Junior Eurovision Song Contest:

  • Spain
  • Belarus
  • France
  • Georgia
  • Germany (New Debut)
  • Poland
  • Russia
  • Kazakhstan
  • Ireland
  • The Netherlands
  • Serbia
  • Ukraine

The 2020 Junior Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Warsaw, Poland on Sunday 29th November. The programme will be held in a TV studio in the capital, rather than a large venue, due to the current situation. Poland won the right to host after Viki Gabor triumphed on home-ground with the song ‘Superhero’.
