Well-known Irish Eurovision spokesperson, host and commentator Gay Byrne has passed away, aged 85.
Gabriel Mary ‘Gay’ Byrne, simply known as Gay Byrne, has passed today at the grand age of 85 after suffering from a long-term illness. Byrne is known for his work in the television industry, especially in the Eurovision Song Contest. He was the spokesperson for the Irish Jury at the contest in both 1967 and 1968, where the contests were held in Austria and the United Kingdom. He commentated for RTE, the National Broadcaster in both 1969 and 1984 and also hosted Eurosong, Ireland’s national selection for the contest in 1984 and 1985.
Gay Byrne has won many awards for his work in the television industry, in particular the Lifetime Achievement Award in February 2007 from Irish Film and Television Network. He will be missed by so many, and his incredible legacy will live on for years to come.
